What is a Lactation Consultant?

A lactation consultant is the health care professional who specializes in breastfeeding issues. Lactation consultants support, educate and teach mothers about breastfeeding.

What to Expect on your first visit:

The lactation consultant will start by taking a history of the pregnancy and delivery. She will sit down with the mother through a whole feed. The mother and consultant will work on latch and positioning to allow the baby to feed effectively.

Afterwards, a plan will be developed for the mother to go home and refer to. Phone follow ups are frequent. Sometimes only a few visits are needed to help solve the problems!

Here are some issues we can help you with:

  • Difficulties latching on; baby is refusing the breast
  • Painful breastfeeding; sore, cracked nipples
  • Inverted or flat nipples

  • Over supply or under supply
  • Slow weight gain
  • Breast reduction
  • Premature baby
  • Multiple births
  • Mother infant separation; back to work or hospitalization
  • Advice on pumps for rental or purchase
